No GP taking patients near you? Your next moves

There is no national register that puts you on a doctor's list in Ireland. General practices are private businesses contracted to the State for card holders, and each one decides whether it has capacity to take you. In parts of the country that capacity simply is not there, which is why so many people find themselves without a GP for months.

Registering, step by step

1. Find practices near you using the HSE service finder or a local search, and list five or six rather than one.
2. Phone rather than email. Ask directly: are you accepting new private patients, and are you accepting medical card or GP visit card patients? The answers are often different.
3. Have your PPS number, proof of address and a summary of your medical history and current medicines ready.
4. If you have a card, complete the change-of-doctor form so the HSE links your card to the new practice.
5. Ask the new practice to request your records from the previous one, and sign the consent form that lets them do it.

When every list is closed

This is common and it is not personal. A practice can decline you because its list is full, because you live outside its catchment area, or because it cannot safely take on more complex care. It cannot decline you on discriminatory grounds.

• Ask to be put on a waiting list, then ring back monthly — places open when patients move away.
• Widen the radius. A practice twenty minutes further out may have capacity.
• If you hold a medical card or GP visit card and cannot find any practice to take you, contact your HSE local health office, which can assign a GP.
• In the meantime, do not go without care: a pharmacist covers minor ailments, an online GP covers assessments and prescriptions that do not need examination, and the out-of-hours co-op covers urgent illness.

Switching practice

You do not need permission or a reason to change GP, and you do not need to tell the old practice why. Register with the new one first, then request the transfer of records. Card holders complete a change-of-doctor form; private patients simply move. Records normally follow within a few weeks, so bring a written list of your diagnoses, medicines and allergies to your first appointment rather than relying on the transfer arriving in time.

Living abroad, working in Ireland, or in between

If you are here temporarily or moving between countries, you can still be treated privately without being on any list. What you should not do is let a chronic condition drift unmonitored because registration is stalled. Blood pressure, thyroid, contraception and mental health treatment all need continuity, and an online GP can bridge a gap while you get onto a list — we send a written summary to your own practice as soon as you have one.

A short honest note about our own role
