Video or phone GP appointment: which should you choose?

At NOVAGP.IE a video consultation and a phone consultation are the same appointment length and the same €39 fee. Choose based on whether looking at something would change the decision.

Choose video when

• There is a rash, lesion, swelling, wound or eye problem to look at.
• The GP may want to see how you are breathing or moving.
• You are showing a device reading, a medicine box or a previous letter.
• It is a first consultation about something complex and you would rather talk face to face.

Phone is fine when

• It is a follow-up, a results discussion or a medication review.
• The problem is described rather than seen — urinary symptoms, headache, mood.
• You are on a poor connection, driving is not involved, or you want privacy at work.

How to prepare

1. Have a list of your current medicines and doses to hand, including anything over the counter.
2. Know your allergies and previous reactions.
3. Write down your three main questions before the call starts.
4. For video, find good light in front of you rather than behind you, and test your camera and microphone a few minutes early.
5. Be somewhere private where you can speak freely.
6. Have your pharmacy name and location ready if you may need a prescription.
