What we'll ask you
14 short questions, most of them yes or no. Your answers go straight to the reviewing GP.
- Have you been diagnosed with migraine by a doctor before?
- Describe a typical attack — warning signs, site, duration, nausea, light sensitivity
- How many migraine days do you get per month?
- Do you get aura (visual zig-zags, numbness or speech change) before the headache?
- What have you used so far, and what worked?
- Have you taken a triptan (sumatriptan, rizatriptan) before?
- Any of: thunderclap headache reaching maximum in seconds, fever with neck stiffness, new weakness or slurred speech, headache after a head injury, or a headache that is different from your usual pattern?
- Any heart disease, angina, previous stroke or TIA, or uncontrolled high blood pressure?
- Do you take painkillers for headache on more than 10 days a month?
- Are you using the combined contraceptive pill?
- Are you pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive?
- Do you have any of: high fever, severe pain, breathlessness, confusion, or symptoms getting rapidly worse?
- List any drug allergies (or type 'none')
- Medicines you currently take (or type 'none')
When we'll say no
These answers stop the request and route you to a consultation instead.
- A first presentation of severe headache must be assessed in person or by video.
- These are red-flag headache features and need urgent assessment.
- Triptans are unsuitable with cardiovascular disease.
- Prescribing in pregnancy or while breastfeeding needs a consultation.
- These symptoms need to be assessed by a doctor directly.
