What is emergency contraception?

Emergency contraception is a safe method used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse. It is also used if your regular contraception method fails, such as a missed pill or a broken condom.

There are two main emergency contraceptive pills available in Ireland. The first type contains levonorgestrel and must be taken within 72 hours (3 days) of intercourse. The second type contains ulipristal acetate (often known as ellaOne) and remains effective for up to 120 hours (5 days) after intercourse. Another option is the emergency copper intrauterine device (IUD), which must be fitted in person by a trained doctor or nurse within 5 days.

The HSE Free Contraception Scheme covers the cost of emergency contraception for eligible residents. This scheme is currently available to women, trans men, and non-binary people residing in Ireland aged 17 to 35.

Under this state scheme, the GP consultation, any necessary follow-ups, and the emergency contraceptive medication at the pharmacy are completely free of charge. For patients outside of this age bracket, private consultations are available with our GPs for a single, transparent fixed fee.
