What is the HPV vaccine?

The HPV vaccine protects against the Human Papillomavirus. This is a very common virus spread through close skin-to-skin contact, usually during sexual activity. Most people will contract at least one type of HPV in their lifetime.

While most HPV infections go away on their own, high-risk strains can persist. These persistent infections can cause cellular changes that lead to cervical, vaginal, vulval, anal, penile, and cancers of the head and neck. The vaccine currently used in Ireland is Gardasil 9, which protects against nine different strains of the virus.

Who is eligible for the free HSE HPV vaccine?

The Health Service Executive (HSE) provides the HPV vaccine free of charge to specific groups through the national school immunisation programme. This is often referred to as the Laura Brennan HPV vaccine catch-up programme.

The free catch-up programme is open to:

All students in secondary school.
Women aged 25 and under.
Men aged 22 and under.

Can adults get the HPV vaccine privately?

Yes, adults who are not eligible for the free HSE scheme can still get vaccinated privately. There is no strict upper age limit, though the vaccine is most effective when administered before exposure to the virus.
