Online GP for sore throat and tonsillitis
Sore throats are usually viral, but tonsillitis with fever, swollen glands and pus on the tonsils may need antibiotics. A video consultation lets your GP look at your throat and score your symptoms properly instead of guessing.

What your GP can do
- Look at your throat and glands on video and apply a recognised scoring system
- Advise on pain relief and safe self-care at home
- Prescribe antibiotics where the score and history support it
- Arrange throat swabs or an ENT referral for recurrent tonsillitis
- Issue a sick certificate for work, school or college
When to seek urgent care instead
- Difficulty breathing, drooling, or unable to swallow your own saliva
- Voice change with severe one-sided throat pain (possible abscess)
- Neck stiffness with a rash that does not fade under a glass
- Symptoms lasting more than a week and worsening

Sore throat and tonsillitis — questions Irish patients ask
- Can you see my throat properly on video?
- In most cases yes — good phone light and a wide open mouth give a usable view, and it is combined with your history, fever and gland examination guidance. If the view is not adequate you will be advised on in-person review.
- My child has a sore throat — can you help?
- Children can be consulted with a parent or guardian present. Very young children, or any child who is drowsy, breathless or not drinking, should be seen in person urgently.
- How much is it?
- €39 for a full video or phone consultation with an Irish-registered GP, including any prescription or certificate issued during it.
