What we'll ask you
13 short questions, most of them yes or no. Your answers go straight to the reviewing GP.
- Describe the pattern and how long it has been going on (receding hairline, crown thinning)
- Are you aged between 18 and 65?
- Was the hair loss sudden, patchy, or with scalp scarring, redness or scaling?
- What treatments have you already tried, and for how long?
- Which treatment are you looking for?
- Any prostate problems, or a raised PSA test?
- Do you understand finasteride can cause sexual side effects, which are usually reversible on stopping?
- Is your partner pregnant or trying to conceive?
- Any current or past depression?
- Any liver problems?
- Do you have any of: high fever, severe pain, breathlessness, confusion, or symptoms getting rapidly worse?
- List any drug allergies (or type 'none')
- Medicines you currently take (or type 'none')
When we'll say no
These answers stop the request and route you to a consultation instead.
- Treatment outside this age range needs a consultation.
- This pattern suggests another cause (alopecia areata, scarring alopecia) and needs examination.
- Finasteride affects PSA readings and needs review first.
- You must be counselled about side effects before this is prescribed.
- Liver disease needs review before finasteride.
- These symptoms need to be assessed by a doctor directly.
