Are online prescription services worth it in Ireland?

Online prescription services are now a normal part of Irish primary care. They are worth it when the medicine is one you already take safely, when the alternative is losing half a day or running out entirely, and when the price is inclusive. They are not worth it when the request needs examination, when the medicine should not be prescribed remotely at all, or when your medical card would cover the same thing for free.

When it is clearly worth paying

• You have run out of a stable, long-term medicine and your own surgery cannot fit you in before you do.
• You need a contraceptive continuation, an inhaler, or a regular repeat and nothing has changed clinically.
• You are travelling and need cover organised today.
• You need the prescription plus a certificate or letter from the same appointment — one €39 consultation covers all of it.
• Taking time off work to attend in person would cost you more than the fee.

When it is not worth it

• You hold a medical card and your registered GP can see you within a reasonable time — that visit is free to you and better joined up.
• The symptom is new, worsening or undiagnosed and really needs examination.
• You are asking for controlled drugs, strong sedatives or opioids: these are not prescribed remotely by any responsible Irish service.
• The medicine needs monitoring — bloods, blood pressure or weight checks — that has not been done recently.

How the prescription reaches your pharmacy

1. The GP reviews your record, current medicines, allergies and — where relevant — pregnancy or breastfeeding status.
2. Automated checks run for drug-drug interactions, allergy conflicts and pregnancy safety before anything is signed.
3. The prescription is digitally signed with the prescribing GP's name and IMC number.
4. It is transmitted through Healthmail, the HSE-approved secure clinical email service, to the pharmacy you nominate.
5. You collect as normal. Nothing to print, and nothing to lose.

Safety is the whole value

The point of paying a doctor rather than filling in a form is that someone qualified can say no. A service that never refuses is not saving you money — it is taking a risk with your health that you did not agree to.
