When we'll say no

These answers stop the request and route you to a consultation instead.

• Personal history of VTE — UKMEC 4 for combined hormonal contraception.
• Known thrombophilia — UKMEC 4 for combined hormonal contraception.
• Current breast cancer — UKMEC 4 for all hormonal contraception.
• Past breast cancer — UKMEC 3, needs a consultation.
• Arterial disease — UKMEC 4 for combined hormonal contraception.
• Significant liver disease — UKMEC 3 or 4 depending on severity.
• SLE with antiphospholipid antibodies — UKMEC 4.
• Possible pregnancy must be excluded before starting contraception.
• Immobility raises clot risk — UKMEC 3 or 4 for combined methods.
• Enzyme inducers reduce hormonal contraceptive effectiveness — needs review.
• Unexplained bleeding must be assessed before a prescription is issued.
• Advised for special monitoring — needs clinician review before a repeat.

Common questions

Can I get the contraceptive pill online in Ireland without seeing a doctor?

Yes. An Irish-registered GP still reviews your request — the review is done from your questionnaire rather than in an appointment. If anything in your answers needs a conversation, we route you to a €39 video or phone consultation instead and refund the €25.

How much does an online contraceptive pill prescription cost?

€25 for the GP review and prescription. Your pharmacy charges separately for the medicine itself. If the GP declines on safety grounds, the €25 is refunded in full.

Do I need a blood pressure reading?

For the combined pill, patch or ring, yes — we need a reading from the last 12 months. Most Irish pharmacies will take one for free or for a small fee. The progestogen-only (mini) pill does not need a blood pressure reading.

How long a supply will I get?

Usually up to 6 months where your answers, blood pressure and history are all reassuring. Longer supplies need an annual pill check.

Can I switch to a different pill?

Yes. Tell us what you are on now and what is not working — side effects, bleeding pattern, or cost — and the GP will advise on a suitable alternative or ask you to book a consultation if the switch needs discussion.
