Online GP for contraception and the pill
Starting, switching or continuing contraception does not need a waiting room. An Irish-registered GP will run the standard UKMEC safety checks, review your blood pressure and history, and issue a prescription to your chosen pharmacy.

What your GP can do
- Assess suitability for combined and progesterone-only pills using UKMEC criteria
- Review blood pressure, BMI, migraine history and smoking status
- Issue repeat prescriptions with an agreed review interval
- Advise on emergency contraception and long-acting options
- Refer for coil or implant fitting where that suits you better
When to seek urgent care instead
- Migraine with aura while taking the combined pill
- New severe headache, chest pain, breathlessness or calf swelling
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding that has not been assessed

Contraception and pill prescriptions — questions Irish patients ask
- Do I need a blood pressure reading?
- For the combined pill, yes — a recent reading is required. Home monitors and pharmacy readings are both accepted.
- How long a supply can I get?
- Where the review is satisfactory, prescriptions are usually issued for up to 6 or 12 months with a review date set.
- Is there a cheaper option than a full consultation?
- Yes — routine repeats can go through the €25 smart prescription questionnaire, which an Irish-registered GP reviews before issuing.
